Historic Babe Ruth Rookie Season Postcard Set for Million-Dollar Auction

An extremely rare and incredibly valuable 1915 Boston Red Sox team postcard, featuring Babe Ruth’s debut season, is about to be part of a highly anticipated auction later this month. With only ten known graded postcards of its kind in existence, this piece of baseball memorabilia is a remarkable find for collectors and enthusiasts alike.

Heritage Auctions, the renowned auction house, will be presenting this particular card in their February Platinum Auction. This card is especially noteworthy as it holds the highest grading among all of Babe Ruth’s rookie year cards, with a PSA rating of 6. Experts estimate that it could fetch a price upwards of $1 million.

The postcard showcases the Red Sox team, clearly labeled as the “American League Champions,” suggesting that it was likely produced before or during the 1915 World Series. Babe Ruth is prominently featured in the back row of the team photograph.

During that year’s World Series, the Red Sox played their games at Braves Field instead of Fenway Park, which had a smaller seating capacity at the time. Braves Field, belonging to Boston’s National League team, could accommodate more spectators.

On the postcard, each member of the Red Sox team is identified by their surname and playing position. Notably, Ruth is seen standing next to Carl Mays, another rookie pitcher. Mays would later join Ruth in playing for the 1920 New York Yankees and is infamously remembered for a tragic incident in which his pitch struck and killed Cleveland player Ray Chapman in August of that year. The card also features Hall of Famers Tris Speaker and Harry Hooper.

This auction follows the recent sale of a 1914 Baltimore News Babe Ruth card, which fetched an astonishing $7.25 million. Remarkably, both the 1914 and 1915 cards share the same population of ten graded examples.

Described by Heritage Auctions as one of the most significant trading cards ever to be offered in the hobby’s auction market, this 1915 postcard holds immense rarity and historical value.

Baseball history collectors and fans of Babe Ruth should mark their calendars, as bidding for this auction will begin on February 2nd. This event promises to be a momentous occasion for those looking to own a rare piece of memorabilia that commemorates the legendary Babe Ruth’s rookie season. Don’t miss out on this extraordinary opportunity.
