Historic 1913 Honus Wagner Card Steals Spotlight at Diverse Sports Auction

A supremely rare 1913 Honus Wagner card is poised to steal the spotlight at an upcoming sports memorabilia auction, captivating collectors with its historic value and scarcity. Issued exclusively in the Pittsburgh area by Voskamp’s Coffee, the card holds a special place in baseball lore, symbolizing the legacy of the iconic shortstop.

Clean Sweep Auctions has unveiled plans to feature the elusive 1913 Voskamp’s Coffee Honus Wagner card in its September auction, marking a rare opportunity for enthusiasts to acquire a piece of baseball history. These cards, originally distributed in packages of coffee and tea over a century ago, have become increasingly hard to come by, adding to their allure among collectors.

Graded and encapsulated at the National Sports Collectors Convention in Chicago, this Wagner card has only been assessed by PSA a handful of times, with SGC grading just a few additional examples. The last appearance of a Voskamp’s Wagner card in a public auction was in 2017, heightening the anticipation surrounding this event and the chance to own a prized collectible from the early days of baseball card collecting.

Alongside this historic Wagner card, the auction will showcase a diverse selection of sports memorabilia, ranging from vintage baseball cards to autographed sets and unique collectibles. Highlights of the auction include:

– Two 1887 N172 Old Judge cards featuring Hall of Famers Mike “King” Kelly and Harry Wright.

– An E102 Ty Cobb graded PSA 2 (mk), offering a glimpse into the early career of the legendary hitter.

– Various Ty Cobb cards, including a T206 with a green background, a T206 (bat on shoulder), and an E103 Williams Caramel graded PSA 3.

– A Cy Young Portrait card graded PSA 5, capturing the essence of the iconic pitcher.

– Collector-grade 1933 Goudey Babe Ruth cards and a 1941 Play Ball Joe DiMaggio graded SGC 5.

The auction also boasts a nearly complete autographed 1952 Bowman Baseball set, rare basketball cards featuring Michael Jordan, high-grade football collectibles including Bart Starr cards, and a compelling selection of memorabilia. From a Walter Johnson signed baseball to a 1933 New York Yankees team-signed ball with Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig’s signatures, the auction offers a treasure trove of sports history.

Steve Verkman of Clean Sweep Auctions expresses excitement for the eclectic mix of items featured, stating, “From ultra-rare vintage cards to significant memorabilia, there’s something that will resonate with every type of collector.” With a blend of rarity, diversity, and historical significance, the auction promises to be a landmark event for sports memorabilia enthusiasts looking to enrich their collections with pieces that embody the spirit of sports history.
