Heritage Icons Photography Auction Unveils Rare Signed Photos

Heritage Auctions has curated a mesmerizing collection of autographed vintage sports photographs for its latest Icons Photography Auction. With a keen eye on capturing moments that resonate with sports card collectors, the auction features a mix of iconic images bound to attract enthusiasts.

One of the prized items up for bidding is a 1948 photograph of basketball legend George Mikan, echoing his 1948 Bowman rookie card. The 8×10 Type 1 photo captures Mikan in action, adorned with his signature in striking blue ink, and is expected to command a price surpassing $20,000.

The allure of signed vintage photos continues throughout the auction, with a late 1940s photo of Cleveland Browns star Otto Graham, identical to the one on his 1950 Bowman Football rookie card, also showcasing his autograph. Additionally, a 1949 photo of Jackie Robinson receiving his Silver Bat for clinching the National League batting title, coupled with a heartfelt inscription to “Jeff,” adds a personal touch and historical significance to the collection.

Another intriguing piece is a 1957 photo of Robinson clearing out his locker at Ebbets Field upon his retirement from baseball. The image captures poignant moments, including his Dodgers cap, home jersey, fielder’s glove, cleats, and equipment bag, alongside two bats, one of which belonged to Gil Hodges, stirring nostalgia among fans and collectors alike.

The auction isn’t devoid of baseball royalty, as a photo believed to be the original image used for Willie Mays’ 1952 Topps card, signed by Mays himself in the 1990s, is also on offer. The online catalog boasts a treasure trove of over 150 vintage images, some dating back more than a century.

Among the notable listings is a photo from the 1919 World Series, showing Black Sox pitcher Eddie Cicotte and Reds’ starter Dutch Reuther shaking hands before a game at Redland Field in Cincinnati. Complete with its original paper caption and stamps on the back, this historical piece is expected to kick off bidding at $8,000.

The auction further showcases rookie photos of sports luminaries like Hank Aaron (1954), Jack Nicklaus (1962), and Pete Maravich (1970). An array of images featuring legends such as Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and other pre-war sports icons add depth to the rich tapestry of sports history preserved through photography.

Running until June 13, the auction provides collectors and enthusiasts a rare chance to own a slice of sports heritage immortalized in vintage photographs. Enthusiasts are invited to explore this unique opportunity to acquire a piece of sporting history and delve into the captivating world of signed vintage sports photography.
