Robert Edward Auctions (REA) hit a grand slam in their recent February auction, pulling in over $1.2 million in sales. The star of the show? A PSA 5 graded M116 Sporting Life Honus Wagner card that commanded an impressive $75,000, setting a new benchmark for its version and highlighting the intense desire for rare vintage sports cards in the market.
But the excitement didn’t stop there. Another standout piece was a Ty Cobb Blue Background card from the same M116 Sporting Life series. Graded PSA GOOD 2, this card shattered records for its condition with a jaw-dropping sale of $15,000. The auction saw a strong turnout from registry builders and collectors, especially drawn to the offering of ten Mint 9 graded cards from the 196 Topps set. Among these treasures, a #2 Roman Mejias PSA MINT 9 stole the spotlight, fetching an impressive $19,200 – the highest price paid for a non-Hall of Famer card in this set and grade.
With a whopping 2,732 items up for grabs, REA presented a smorgasbord of collectibles to eager bidders. The auction featured other notable sales like a 1909-1911 T206 White Border Ty Cobb Portrait Red Background graded PSA VG-EX 4 that went for $21,000, a 1934 R320 Goudey #37 Lou Gehrig graded PSA EX-MT 6 that sold for $18,000, and a complete set of 1986-1987 Fleer Basketball graded PSA NM-MT 8 that fetched $12,000, among a plethora of other treasures.
Brian Dwyer, the President of REA, expressed his delight at the auction’s success and the overwhelming response from the collector community. He also dropped hints about the upcoming March and Spring Auctions, teasing exciting prospects for the hobby’s future.
This recent auction by REA not only reaffirms the enduring allure and value of vintage sports cards and memorabilia but also sets the stage for what promises to be an exhilarating series of future events. With the next Encore event slated for March 14-24 and the highly anticipated Spring Catalog Auction kicking off on April 5, REA continues to solidify its position as a premier destination in the sports collectibles market.
