REA’s June Auction Highlights Set-Building and Vintage Staples

REA’s June Encore Auction wrapped up with a bang, showcasing an array of high-end complete sets and vintage staples that had collectors buzzing with excitement. Set-building took center stage, with six complete graded sets making it to the top ten items sold. The top three sellers were Topps Baseball complete sets from 1963, 1960, and 1961, fetching impressive prices of $75,000, $66,000, and $54,000 respectively. These sets hold prestigious ranks on the PSA Set Registry, further adding to their appeal.

Among the standout sales was a rare 1970-1971 Topps Basketball #160 Jerry West card graded PSA GEM MINT 10. The card, one of only two examples graded this high, set a new record by selling for $54,000. This sale gained particular significance following the recent passing of the legendary Basketball Hall of Famer, who inspired the iconic NBA logo.

Other noteworthy sales included a 1914 E145 Cracker Jack #30 Ty Cobb card graded SGC FAIR 1.5, which fetched $38,400, marking a record for the card in that grade. A 1957 Topps #95 Mickey Mantle graded PSA NM-MT+ 8.5 also sold for the same amount, showcasing the continued demand for vintage baseball memorabilia.

The auction featured a diverse range of items, with a 1980-1981 Topps Basketball Unopened Wax Box, containing 36 packs from Larry Bird and Magic Johnson’s rookie year, selling for $18,600. Collectors also vied for rarities such as a 1921 Exhibits Babe Ruth card graded PSA VG+ 3.5, which went for $16,200, and a 1933 R319 Goudey #92 Lou Gehrig card graded PSA EX 5, selling for $13,200.

REA President Brian Dwyer noted, “This auction highlighted the strong demand for top-quality graded sets and vintage rarities, reflecting the continued enthusiasm of collectors in the market.” Dwyer also teased the upcoming Summer Catalog Auction, set to commence on July 23, promising an exciting lineup of items bound to captivate enthusiasts.
